This is just a selection of the paintings I've done, from the most recently completed, to those I finished a longer while ago. Hope you enjoy. I wanted to practice painting horses, and asked for references I could
use--one of the other Luna authors (Caitlin Brennan, who writes the books
with white horses) pointed me to her website with pictures of her horses.
This is based on one of the photos she took. I've touched up the background
since this photo was taken of the painting--when the paint dries, I'll
take a picture of the revised version--but I'm rather pleased with it...
This is a little (5x7) landscape of the Texas Panhandle in early spring.
I framed it in a leather-wrapped frame one of the local ladies makes--her
husband is in the custom saddle-making business, so she has access to all
his leather scraps. I like the way they look together.
This is another of the little landscapes I did, but at sunset. I really
liked doing them, so I ordered some more of the little hardboards to do
some more.
I had the photograph of the roses a long time before I worked up the
nerve to try to paint them. And they were as hard as I was afraid they
would be. Probably won't tackle roses again for a while, unless I get
very, very abstract. I did this one for my brother-in-law for Christmas, as he loves all
things longhorn...haven't given it to him, yet, but we're heading downstate
in a few weeks. I think I've been on an animal kick--er, exploration. These racehorses
are supposed to look blurry--like they're racing. I rather like this one,
but the colors don't look quite right here. The lead jockey's silks are
actually bright purple.
I liked this winter painting with the sheep. I painted this one a couple of years ago and just never posted it--
not sure why. It's a painting of Shiprock in the Navajo Nation in New
Mexico. I gave it to my friend Belinda who went with me on our research
trip through New Mexico. I didn't get an actual picture of the Shiprock
when we drove by it, because Belinda was trying to take a picture with
her camera while she was driving and I had to take it away from her and
take pictures of the rock with her camera. This painting is from a
postcard.
"Moon Over Memphis"
I've been working on paintings of Texas scenes and Texas
wildflowers--some turned out (like the Memphis one and the pink bluebonnet) and
some haven't. (And no, I haven't posted it--I'm going to paint over it and
try again.) The Texas paintings are all from photographs I took myself.
